Religion often influences more than just the churchgoer, and such is the case with Billie Holiday and her decidedly secular music. At an evening of music and discussion, Tracey Fessenden explains how Holiday’s Catholic upbringing and the presence of black southern church music influenced her sound. Jazz artist Pamela Hart sings renditions from Holiday’s catalog.
